This small and narrow garden next to a contemporary home presented several design challenges. A parking garage beneath the garden resulted in a very shallow layer of soil, while existing raised beds, walls and fences made the space feel even more enclosed. Views beyond the garden offered very little greenery.
By removing the lawn and introducing a gently curving gravel path, we visually extended the garden and directed the eye towards a new focal point at the far end, formed by decorative Corten steel panels. Additional raised beds and a small mound provided greater soil depth and created new opportunities for planting.
The planting scheme is based on species well adapted to sunny, hot and relatively dry conditions. Native plants inspired by Slovenian dry grasslands are combined with Mediterranean influences, selected garden perennials and ornamental grasses. Shades of purple, pink and white, together with delicate grasses and evergreen structure, create a rich yet restrained composition. Despite its modest dimensions, the redesigned garden now feels layered, diverse and considerably more spacious.
