From Lawn to Living Habitat, Domžale

A narrow strip of lawn beside a public square in the Municipality of Domžale was transformed into a more biodiverse planting of perennials, ornamental grasses and shrubs. Instead of a conventional lawn requiring regular mowing, we created a resilient and more sustainable planting scheme based on robust species that need very little irrigation or fertilisation.

Strong seasonal change is an important part of the design. The colour palette was carefully linked to the striking yellow façade of the adjacent building, while different textures, heights and plant forms ensure that the planting evolves continuously throughout the year. Particular emphasis was placed on nectar-rich plants, attracting large numbers of bees, bumblebees, butterflies and other insects. The result is a public planting that combines a strong visual identity with a valuable ecological function.
